NASA recently discovered a new star system only 40 light years away. This newly found system contains seven planets, in which three or four may be in a habitable zone.
NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, revealing that the planets orbited around what is considered a “tiny, nearby, ultra-cool dwarf star”, which has left many in shock—the TRAPPIST-1 star is reportedly 20 times smaller than our sun, which causes the planets in that system to have shorter orbits around the sun.
With the release of information, people have already made jokes about leaving this planet to live on the planets found in TRAPPIST-1, which is an awful idea. Looking at the current state our current planet is in, I think this sounds like an excuse to leave behind what we’ve already ruined, and to start fresh to then destroy another planet.
Since three of the planets are in a Goldilocks Zone, there is a large possibility that the planets contain one of the most vital thing known to man—water. Although nothing is confirmed yet, I believe that the chance of water supports the fact that there could be life in the system.
Despite the jokes, newly found system is by far one of the most fascinating things that we have discovered, and leaves people wondering whether there are more star systems with life out there than we know.
Space is incredibly immeasurable, and the possibilities of new life on other planets are endless. With that being said, another possibility that comes to mind, is life on other planets.
Ah, Valentine’s Day, the annual holiday that revolves around spending money on last minute heart shaped chocolates and teddy bears that repeat cheesy quotes.
With the rise in price of chocolates, and of roses that are bound to die, Valentine’s Day is inarguably one of the most expensive holidays, following Halloween and Easter. According to the National Retail Federation, “Valentine’s Day spending is expected to hit $19.7 billion” for 2016, and $18.2 billion for this year. It seems as though the holiday gives companies an excuse to raise their prices, taking advantage of those who are trying to express their love.
Despite the fact that Valentine’s Day is expensive, what it has turned to is incredibly cheap. Over time, the holiday has lost its original purpose—it once was about spending time with loved ones and showing your appreciation for them. Now, it is about who can spoil their partner more to get more likes and retweets on social media. Cheap.
Sure, Valentine’s Day is the day to show off your love for your partner to those around you, but why wait until February to do that? It should not be the only day you show that you appreciate your partner—that should be shown as much as you can while you two are together.
Valentine’s Day is a joke. It seems as though it is teaching us that this one specific day of the year, is the only day we are allowed to spoil our loved ones. We should not limit ourselves to one day out of the entire year to love and care for our loved ones. We should express our love for others every day of the year.
If you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with a special someone, more power to you, but do not take this holiday as an excuse to being the only day you appreciate your partner. Appreciate them while you have them.
The new movie Split, starring James McAvoy as Kevin, is a movie about a man diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, or Split Personality disorder. The movie’s trailer features the main character, Kevin, getting into a car full of three teenaged girls, and then holding them hostage in an isolated room. The trailer shows one of Kevin’s twenty-three personalities saying an eerie “he’s coming for you”, referring to the “Beast” that is Kevin’s twenty-fourth personality.
This suspenseful thriller, directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, is a psychology-based movie that has been catching the attention of many. Because it deals with a mental disorder that is highly criticized when portrayed in film, people went off when it came to this movie.
According to CNN, people with Dissociative Identity Disorder feel discriminated against, because of the portrayal in the film. Those with split personality disorder felt as though they had not been portrayed accurately, and that the movie had made them out to be psychotic monsters. With that being said, Split has received a lot of negative feedback.
The movie itself received a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb. Because the movie deals with sensitive topics such as sexual abuse, pedophilia, self-harm, and incest, the movie received a strong negative reaction from the viewers. According to Heatstreet, viewers complained that the movie should have a trigger warning because of the sexual abuse presented within the movie.
Although the movie had been hyped up since the first promotion, it was a major letdown to many. The movie took too long to get to the part everyone had been waiting for, and teasing throughout the movie.
For a movie that received so much hype, Split did not come close to meeting the standards. With suspenseful factors and inaccurate psychological facts, Split was highly disappointing, and not worth spending money on.
Earlier this year, four black teenagers and a young adult were caught livestreaming a disabled white male that had been kidnapped and taken to one of their homes, where he was verbally and physically abused. The event took place in Chicago, and the four young adults, have been “taken into custody” according to the Huffington Post, where they will be punished for wrongdoing against the white male. The four young adults that had caused harm were Jordan Hill (18), Tesfaye Cooper (18), Brittany Covington (18), and Tanishia Covington (24).
Although many people are claiming that Black Lives Matter is responsible for their actions, I disagree. Black Lives Matter is about equality for African American people, for everyone—not about spreading hatred for other races. But as usual, the internet trolls are trying to make the campaign for equality, a negative movement.
The four young adults that had mistreated the white teen were livestreaming the kidnapping had also demanded more attention from the viewers, which angered many, including myself. In the time that the event had been broadcasted, the four young teens yelled, “f—k white people, f—k Trump!”, which caused people to think that it was a Black Lives Matter related event.
To say that the kidnapping is a “Black Lives Matter kidnapping” is ridiculous. On the website of Black Lives Matter, it says “we are broadening the conversation around the state… about the ways in which Black lives are deprived of our basic human rights and dignity”. Meaning, that the movement is meant to raise awareness about the injustice that Black people are constantly going through, not to spread the hate.
It is unfair to say this kidnapping was a part of the Black Lives Matter movement, because all it does is promote hate, which is the complete opposite of what Black Lives Matter stands for. There is no excusing what they did wrong, there is no labeling what they did as a ‘movement’—hate is hate. And hate should not be spread.
Fidel Castro, after almost 50 long years of being in power at Cuba, died of natural causes at the age of 90. Since his death had been announced by his brother, Raul Castro, the people had gone out to pay their respects. According to NBC, China had also paid their respects to Castro by leaving flowers near the Cuban Embassy in Beijing, China.
While many believed that Castro was a good leader, many others disagree— he remained an icon of rebellion, but he also controlled everything about Cuba. As a dictator, he did not allow anyone to enter or leave beyond the Cuban borders, and whenever the people had tried to escape, they would either be sent to jail, or would be executed.
As well as mourning his passing, many celebrated the death of the dictator. Cuba had been left in the hands of Fidel’s brother, Raul Castro, he plans to carry out Fidel’s plans of keeping Cuba a strictly communist country. “Yes, we will overcome any obstacle, turmoil or threat in the building of socialism in Cuba,” Raul told Cuba.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Raul had taken “steps to open up Cuba’s economy… giving Cubans greater freedom to travel abroad.” While Fidel had made it clear he didn’t want Cubans leaving the country, Raul made it easier for Cubans to travel.
Although Raul Castro promises to continue Fidel’s legacy of spreading communism, he declared that he would step down in office in 2018.
Fidel Castro’s passing came as a surprise and left many in shock, whether it be from relief that Cuba’s dictator had passed, or of sadness that Cuba had lost what many considered a charming leader. Though half the country is still mourning, it is unknown what Cuba’s future holds now that Fidel is no longer in power.
Stranger Things is a show that leaves the viewers wanting more—it’s a show that reaches levels of satisfaction that are unbelievable.
Set in Indiana in 1983, the supernatural aspects of the story, such as the idea of other dimensions presented, compliment the dark lighting of the show. Stranger Things offers a spectacular cast with a chemistry between them strong enough to be felt off screen. With a cast of several well-known actors, such as Winona Ryder (known for Edward Scissorhands), and some lesser known actors like Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown, the show comes to life with their vibrant characters.
The show is based around a missing boy (Noah Schnapp) and his friends and family desperately trying to find him, but things take a turn when Chief Hopper (David Harbour) finds something unexpected.
Although the show is already on its season break, a second season has been announced the same way the show opens—with the eerie opening song, only the lights spell out “season two” rather than Stranger Things. The second season’s return was announced via Netflix’s YouTube account on August 31, and is to be expected in 2017. The 56-second trailer announces the titles of the episodes that will be released for the second season, revealing little to no information about said episodes. With elements of struggling in teen love and choosing to listen to authorities or what’s right, this Netflix Original is widely understood amongst young teenagers that may be experiencing similar problems—aside from the supernatural element.
