Swedish Journalist Ends Up in Pieces in Denmark

by Jett Gonzales – Staff Writer

Over the summer, Swedish journalist, Kim Wall was found dead near Copenhagen. She was last seen with Peter Maudsen, an inventor, who gave her a ride in his home-made UC3 Nautilus submarine. But, Maudsen claims that he is not the killer.

Wall’s body was dismembered, investigators have found her head, legs and torso and are still looking for her arms. Each body part was found at the bottom of the sea in a plastic bag with heavy pieces of metal to make them sink, and just a few weeks ago, a saw was also found, which is suspected to be the tool that was used to remove the limbs of Wall.

Maudsen has been charged with manslaughter, but claims not guilty. He explains that she died in a “terrible accident” at sea, where she was hit by a 155-pound hatch door that was on ship. Maudsen claims that he “buried” her body after the event. The only problem with Maudsen’s claim is that investigators have found no evidence of fractures or blunt force trauma on Wall’s decapitated skull, meaning that the cause of death is still unknown,

As the investigation continues, the killer seems clear, but is still a mystery. The answer to Wall’s death should be found within the coming days.

Washington Football Teams are Fire

by Jett Gonzales – Staff Writer

Washington football fans have more than just the Seahawks to cheer for this year. For the first time in many years, both the University of Washington and Washington State are in contention for a run in the college football playoffs.

Going in to week seven of the college football season, both Washington and Washington State were ranked in the top 10, and unfortunately, both lost to unranked teams. The cougars were ranked eighth in the nation at the time and were on a roll. They were coming off wins over the Oregon Ducks and the number five ranked, USC Trojans. No one could deny that Washington state was for real this year. They have a star quarterback, Luke Falk, who is in the running for the award for the best college football player, the Heisman trophy. Luke Falk guides this team, and that is exactly the opposite of what happened week seven against California. The cougars were blown out by the bears thirty-seven to three. Last year Luke Falk had a career game against the bears with five passing touchdowns, this year he had another career game against them, but this time with five interceptions. The high-powered offense of Washington State was held to just three points and no touchdowns.

The fifth ranked Washington Huskies played against unranked Arizona State. The Huskies have a stout defense and an exciting offense. Many believe that the Huskies have the easiest schedule in college football, which made expectations high for them. It was expected for them to easily go undefeated, but Arizona State had different plans. The Washington defense was stellar, holding the sun devils to just 13 points. Unfortunately, the offense could only muster one touchdown, leading the huskies to their first loss of the season.

Both losses have huge impacts on the future of this season for the University of Washington and Washington state. They nearly take both teams out of the college football playoffs. The Huskies are now ranked twelfth and the Cougars are ranked fifteenth, meaning that it is going to take a lot for either team to make it back to the top five.

Although these two losses are devastating for both teams, they still have a very bright future and both teams look like they will be contenders for the next few years. Washington football fans should expect big things from their top colleges.

Oakland Raiders Anticipate Signing Retired Marshawn Lynch

by Jett Gonzales – Staff Reporter

Since the conclusion of the 2016 – 2017 NFL season, post season has been heating up. One of the biggest stories is the possibility of former Seattle Seahawks running back, Marshawn Lynch, coming out of retirement.
The rumor began circulating when the Oakland Raiders showed interest in trying to get Lynch to come out of retirement and play for them. This rumor was pushed aside as most people believed that Lynch was going to stay retired. However, this all changed when Lynch began negotiating with the team, and now the Oakland Raiders are in the process of acquiring the 31-year-old running back. Many people believed that the only way Lynch would come out of retirement would be if he could compete for another Super Bowl ring and if he could play in his hometown, Oakland, California.
The Raiders had one of their best seasons in years last season, going 12 – 4, but lost in the wild card round because of an injury that sidelined their starting quarterback, Derek Carr. Many fans believe the Raiders are just one or two players away from being title contenders, and Lynch could be that player. Last year, the Raiders shuffled through three different running backs throughout the season and Lynch would provide them with a reliable option to carry the ball multiple times a game. The only issue now is figuring out how much the Raiders are willing to pay for Lynch.
Marshawn Lynch is still “owned” by the Seattle Seahawks, and if he were to come out of retirement, he would still be under contract with them. Therefore, if the Raiders want Lynch, they are going to have to give up something to Seattle. Lynch is best known for his nickname “Beastmode” because of his tough and powerful running style. While his running style put up some impressive numbers over his 9-year career, rushing for 9,112 yards and 74 touchdowns, it has also put a lot of wear and tear on his body. Lynch only made it through half of his final season in Seattle before having to sit out due to a sports hernia. He compiled just 417 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Although the process of getting Lynch to Oakland took almost all off-season, on April 26, Lynch was traded to the Oakland Raiders for 2018 late round draft picks. Lynch signed a two-year deal with a base salary of three million. Marshawn Lynch will be heading to Oakland for the 2017 – 2018 NFL season.

Track and Field Confident About Spring Season

The Track and field team this year is looking forward to a successful season with new head coach, Scott Cleary. The team is young, motivated, has lots of talent and is looking to make an impact this year.
Being a new head coach can be a tough job, but coach Cleary is ready to lead this team. “It’s an interesting transition” Cleary said, “I’ve been head coach for cross country for several years, but track is a little bit of a different beast.” The track team is prepared to take any problems head on thanks to coach Cleary and the great assistant coaches, “All our assistant coaches are highly confident in all their events and I think that’s what makes this team work.” These assistant coaches include Jolai Persinger, Mike Shepard and Karl Maw. The track and field team is primed for a solid season because of the addition of new head coach Cleary and all the assistant coaches.
Along with a new head coach, this team has many young athletes. “This is kind of an interesting year for us because we have a lot of younger athletes in the sprints, jumps and throws groups.” Cleary said. Right now, one of the team’s goals is to “develop in a way that sets the tone for future years.” While there are many young athletes, there are still a lot of returning athletes, especially in the distance events. “The distance squad is almost half the team and we have a lot of returning runners in that group.” Another goal that this team has set is to “build on the firm foundation we already have with the number of retuning athletes that have done track for many years.”
Since track and field is a competitive sport, setting goals like the ones just mentioned are important for keeping the team focused and ready to give it their all every day. However, one thing that is always emphasized in not only track and field but all sports is health. “Our goal that’s always present is to develop fitness and healthy living habits…and to build the mental toughness.” Cleary said. Having this core goal is very beneficial to every athlete participating in this sport because of the long-term benefits they will earn through working hard and developing good habits.
The track and field team has many goals that they can carry with them throughout this season. However, the only way to reach these goals is to have the athletes achieve them, and there are some athletes that stand out amongst the rest. “I think about it in two categories,” Cleary said, “There are athletes that stand out because of their abilities…and there are athletes that understand the sport and are great leaders.” Many athletes stand out because of their abilities. “Jordan Hall is probably our fastest sprinter,” Cleary said, “Madison Marko is a very diverse sprinter…in the girls’ pole vault; we have Ariel Johnston, who does pretty well in the league.” For the athletes that understand the sport and are leaders, “we have Amy Mitchell, who’s a really strong leader…and of course our captains, Kylie Johnson and Evan Eggerud.”
Despite this team is starting the season with a new head coach and many young athletes, they are setting themselves up for success with many goals that can point them in right direction, as well as many good athletes and great coaches to lead them.

March Madness Season Leaves Fans Preparing Their Brackets

by Jett Gonzales – Staff Reporter

There is one month that is much different from the rest. Every year this month plays with every college basketballs’ fans emotions, it brings last second shots, blowouts and unbelievable upsets. Prepare your brackets because March madness has arrived.
At the end of every college basketball season, 68 division I college basketball teams compete in a single elimination tournament to determine the national champion of the men’s NCAA division I basketball. The tournament is scheduled to start on March 14th and end on April 4th in the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The top team in each of the 32 conferences get an automatic bid into the tournament and the NCAA selection committee will select the other 36 teams. The teams will then play until there are only 16 teams left, hence the name “sweet 16” then from there it gets lowered to the “elite 8” and then the “final 4” and then the national championship.
This tournament is one of the most exciting sports events in the U.S. because of how involved the fans can get. Some people do not even watch college basketball until the tournament starts, because it is much more exciting than the regular basketball season. But, the biggest thing that gets fans extremely attached to the tournament is the brackets. The brackets are what keep fans coming back every year, because obviously, everyone wants their team to win, but when you’re making your bracket, you’re trying to get it perfect, there’s no skill involved, you’re making the best guess and gambling on whether they win or not. The odds of getting a perfect bracket is 1 in 9.2 quintillion. Just to compare, the odds of hitting the mega millions jackpot is only 1 in 258 million. 2 years ago, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans were offering up one billion dollars if you got a perfect bracket. This is what makes this tournament so intriguing. When they seed the 68 teams, the number 1 ranked team is obviously the best, but rankings do not matter. Any team can lose on any given day. Every year there are crazy upsets and that is what keeps fans watching, because it is always exciting when a smaller college that not many people have heard of, beats a big name D1 school.
The NCAA basketball tournament has come. So, prepare your brackets and choose your teams wisely because getting a perfect bracket is close to impossible. But in the end, fans just want to get what they get every year, and that’s mind blowing upsets, glorious comebacks and heartbreaking endings.

Atlanta Falcons Disappoint Fans All Over the Nation With Unprecedented Super Bowl Upset

by Jett Gonzales – Staff Reporter

The Super Bowl is the biggest sports event in America every year. The game has become legendary, and this season was no different. This year, the winners of the AFC championship, New England Patriots, faced off against the winners of the NFC championship, the Atlanta Falcons at Super Bowl 51 in Houston, Texas.
For every Super Bowl, the hype for the game is unreal. The Patriots were coming into the game with a regular season record of 14 and 2, whereas the Atlanta Falcons finished the year off going 11 and 5. Although their records may convince you otherwise, these teams had all the components to what would become one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time. The Falcons came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Statistically, they had one of the best offenses in NFL history. Matt Ryan, the quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, was named the NFL’s most valuable player the day before. He threw for 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Ryan was arguably the best quarterback in the NFL this season, but this would not have been possible without the support of his star wide receiver, Julio Jones. He caught 83 passes for 1,409 yards and six touchdowns. Jones and Ryan were the stars of this team, but the Falcons also had two solid players at running back. Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman combined for 1,599 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns. Although the Flacons had the best offense in the NFL, their defense was below average. They ranked 27th in points allowed, 25th in total yards allowed, 28th in passing yards allowed, and 17th in rush yards allowed. However, even though their defense was one of the worst in the NFL, they still had the league leader in sacks, Vic Beasley Jr. This team came into the game ready to face off against the New England Patriots.
This was the Patriots second appearance in the Super Bowl in the past 3 years, winning their last one against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. New England also has one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady. Brady was suspended for the first four games of this season, but he still put up great stats. He threw for 3,554 yard, 28 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. The Patriots also have a solid receiving core and running back. Julian Edelman, the Patriots starting receiver, caught 98 passes for 1,108 yards but just one touchdown. An unsung hero that arose during the Patriot’s season was wide receiver, Chris Hogan. Hogan caught 38 passes for 680 yards and two touchdowns, but he averaged over 20 yards a catch. Unlike the Falcons, the Patriots did not have one outstanding receiver, but they did have a bull of a running back. LeGarrette Blount ran for 1,161 yards and led the league with 18 rushing touchdowns. Although the Patriots have a great offense, they would play the Super Bowl without one of their best players, Rob Gronkowski, who is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Even though this is a huge loss, the Patriots have a solid defense to complement their offense. The Patriots have the number one scoring defense in the NFL as well as the number three ranked rush defense. The New England Patriots were prepared to take on the Falcons.
Most fans expected a back and forth battle between the two teams, but for the first half, it was anything but that. The Atlanta Falcons came out extremely strong, their defense played nothing as the stats led people to believe. They held the Patriots to just 3 points in the first half; including an 82 yard pick six. The Falcons offense torched the Patriots as well, getting into the end zone twice. The offense performed even better than what the fans expected. The game was being handed to the Falcons. No team has ever comeback from a 10-point deficit in the super bowl and won. Coming out of the half, the Falcons scored again, the Patriots answered back with a touchdown of their own, but they missed the extra point. It seemed like it just was not the Patriot’s game to win. Going into the fourth quarter, the Patriots were down 28 to 9. The game was all but over. Although the future looked bleak for New England, they were not ready to give up. This led to one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history. Tom Brady led the Patriots down the field scoring a field goal. On the following possession by the Falcons, Matt Ryan was sacked by Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower leading to a fumble recovered by the patriots. Now in great field position, the Patriots scored bringing the game to just a one possession game. The Falcons had to keep the ball away from the patriots. The drive started with a 39-yard pass play to running back, Devonta Freeman, and then a spectacular 27-yard sideline catch by Julio Jones. Once again, the Falcons were in position to win the game, now in field goal range, all they had to do was run the ball a few times and kick a field goal, which would put the game out of reach. Instead of running, the Falcons passed the ball three times leading to a sack of minus 12-yards and then a holding penalty of minus 10-yards, pushing them out of field goal range. Then, on 3rd and 33, Matt Ryan throws an incomplete pass, leading to punt, giving the ball back to New England. The Patriots drove down the field and on a second down play, Tom Brady launches a pass down the middle leading to one of the most spectacular catches in Super Bowl history, Julian Edelman pulls in the catch just inches off the ground, with three defenders surrounding him. Now with just a minute left to play in the 4th quarter, New England scores a touchdown, along with a two-point conversion to bring this game into overtime.
The Patriots won the coin toss in overtime, electing to receive. The Falcons were worn down and tired, New England marched all the way down to the 2-yard line, just one run play away from winning the Super Bowl and completing the comeback. But, on first down, the patriots throw the ball to the corner of the end zone, where it gets tipped by linebacker, Vic Beasley Jr. It was scary moment, because Patriots fans know all too well what can happen if you throw the ball at the goal line. On the following play, Brady handed it off to running back James white for the game winning touchdown, completing the greatest comeback in super bowl history, and giving Tom Brady his 5th super bowl ring, making him the only quarterback in NFL history to win five super bowls.
Super Bowl 51 was one to be remembered, what seemed to be a blow out, became a classic comeback led by one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, Tom Brady. For Falcons fans, this one was a tough pill to swallow. The Falcons played a hard fought game, but ultimately fell short. But, for football fans, this was quite the game. No one can wait to see what next year’s super bowl will bring us

They were here to add another national championship to their trophy case.

The game was expected to be a back and forth game, but it wasn’t even close. The Clemson Tigers dominated the Buckeyes, the Tigers shut out Ohio to win the Fiesta bowl. They won every exchange in commanding fashion. Clemson put up 31 points and held Ohio state to nothing. Clemson’s offense gained a total of 470 yards, while holding the Buckeyes to just 215. Deshaun Watson, starting quarterback and Heisman trophy runner up, passed for 259 yards, ran for 57 and scored 3 touchdowns. The dominance that Clemson showed gave them another shot at the Crimson Tide. The stage was set, a rematch for the College Football National Championship. The Alabama Crimson Tide vs. The Clemson Tigers.
The National Championship game was everything the fans asked for and more. Early on, it looked like Alabama was going to run away with this one, going up 14 – 7 at the half and 24 – 14 going into the 4th quarter. But Clemson was not going to go down that easily. The Tigers, led by quarterback Deshaun Watson and star receiver Mike Williams, came storming back in the fourth quarter scoring two touchdowns in quick succession, giving them their first lead, going up 28 – 24 with four minutes left in the game. But the Crimson Tide answered back with a 30-yard touchdown run by their quarterback, Jalen Hurts. At the time, down 31 – 28, it all came down to Deshaun Watson to lead his team down the field and either tie the game, or win it all. The game was decided in the last six seconds; Clemson was 2 yards away from a national championship. With one quick pass, Deshaun Watson threw the game winning touchdown, ending the 35-year title drought for Clemson.
The championship game was one to be remembered. It was a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Overall, this year’s playoffs gave us two weeks of unforgettable plays and crazy endings. There were tears of joy and tears of sadness. But no one can wait to see how their teams will stack up to this year’s champs, the Clemson Tigers.
