Transgender Bathroom Rights: Dangerous Conflict

Transgender bathroom cartoon Jan. issue

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

People have been using public bathrooms without a hitch for decades. Until about the last five years, nobody had any complaints with the gender labels on bathrooms. People were more concerned with far more important things, like war, or more pressing forms of discrimination such as Gay Rights or Black Rights. Now that those issues are in the process of being resolved, people will just move onto the next thing: bathrooms
Transgender people have problems with the fact that gender specific bathrooms discriminate against them. They believe that no matter what gender you physically are you can use either bathroom. They feel that the gender you identify with is the bathroom you should be allowed to use.
Some equal rights advocates would claim this is an excellent policy that should be held by all facility’s containing a public bathroom, but this idea actually affects people far more negatively than positively for two main reasons: first, any person could sexually harass another person in a bathroom with no boundaries on gender, also a person going into a bathroom different than their gender’s respective bathroom, isn’t really that enforceable.
First, any man could go into a bathroom dressed like a woman and say that they identified as a woman. But now you have created the perfect situation in which a person could be raped. Any rapist who says they identify as a woman now has an open doorway to do as they please. They could easily go into a bathroom of the opposite gender and assault someone. With equal rights advocates so up in arms about the amount of rape going on, you would think they might try their best to prevent it instead of offering up a perfect opportunity for it to happen.
Also, before it was ok to go into any bathroom that is preferable, people could go into one and no one could really enforce the rule that it was required to go into your assigned bathroom. If a man wanted to dress like a women and go into the women’s bathroom really who is going to stop them, besides an angry civilian. No law enforcement officer is going to get there quickly enough to enforce this rule, and unless they sexually assault someone then no one could really press charges. The laws only allowing a person to go into the bathroom of their assigned gender aren’t really enforceable.
People might argue that the bathrooms make the transgender people feel accepted and actually protect them from sexual harassment and assault. They also might say that these laws will take away enforcement of singular sex bathrooms. In reality both of these claims are false, these bathrooms open the doorway to sexual assault and harassment due to the ability of either gender to go into either bathroom. It also wasn’t enforced before these laws so saying that the enforcement was oppressive is false and misguided.

2016-2017 NBA Playoff Predictions Arrive

The 2016-2017 NBA season is nearly halfway through. The teams have gotten over their early regular season jitters, and are only looking at one thing: where they will be seeded on the playoffs. For teams who probably won’t be in the playoffs like (8-28*) Nets or the (11-27*) Mavericks they are just trying to finish the season with some pride and hope for next year. For borderline playoff teams like the (18-18*) Bucks (19-19*) Bulls or the (18-18*) Wizards every game is a battle. A win brings them closer to their goal, and a loss just farther away.
For some teams they are already ahead of the game, teams like the Golden State Warriors (32-6) or the Cleveland Cavaliers (28-8) are just looking to lock up a good seed, then rest their players so they can be at their best come playoff time.
The Cavaliers starting lineup against the Bulls in a recent game had only two of their normal starters in, they lost the game but weren’t too put out, knowing that if they ever really want a win, they can utilize all their players, and get it. They are the best team in the NBA. Especially with the addition ofKyle Korver.
The playoffs this year are going to be very similar to last year with the number one seeds pretty much locked up by the Golden State Warriors of the west and the Cleveland Cavaliers of the east. Teams like the San Antonio Spurs, the Toronto Raptors, the Boston Celtics, and the Houston Rockets are all fighting for a second or third seed in their conference in order to have a leg up in the playoffs. A team that can consistently win games must consist of multiple great players working together, teams like the Thunder only have one good player, these teams can’t put together as many wins as a team with all five players working together.
Teams always have a strategy to get the best position they can, whether a team is rebuilding or contending for a championship each team will be looking for their best chance at a good year, or a good next year.
Below is a prediction I have made concerning the 2016-2017 playoff seeding. These are based off the current standings and projections of what I think will happen.
Eastern Conference:
1. Cavaliers
2. Raptors
3. Celtics
4. Pacers
5. Hawks
6. Bucks
7. Hornets
8. Wizards
Western Confrence
1. Warriors
2. Spurs
3. Rockets
4. Clippers
5. Grizzlies
6. Jazz
7. Thunder
8. Trailblazers

Mannequin Challenge is Popular Among Everyone

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

“Black Beatles”, this song is a real crowd pleaser. Find out how the song By Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane has swept the music world, and initiated a viral challenge further increasing its popularity. The song took down Closer by the chainsmokers for the number one spot on the billboard hot 100 list. It didn’t stop there though.
The song by Sremmurd and Mane has actually initiated its own #challenge. Following the #runningman challenge to the song “My Boo” comes the #mannequinchallenge, this challenge involves a group of people staying completely still, while the camera man walks slowly around capturing all the best poses, while the song “Black Beatles” plays in the background.
This challenge has many famous people doing it. The entire Milwaukee Bucks NBA basketball team including superstars like, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Jabari Parker, did this on their team jet, this just helped shoot Black Beatles farther up on the billboards. Odell Beckham Jr. one of today most recognized football players was even caught doing this challenge pre-game. Other pro sports teams and famous people have done this challenge and it just increases its popularity.
Like a High school even Kentlake has picked up on this trend. Classes like Mrs. Best’s sixth period class have even participated. This challenge had the class frozen as if in a normal moment, but the song “Black Beatles” was playing in the background.
Many cool things have been done with this challenge, one group of personal trainers even indulged in this doing some pretty epic, (and strenuous) poses. One man was holding a flagpole, this tricky pose involves using your hands grabbing a pole and making your body perfectly horizontal to it. Holding this for a silly challenge may seem extreme but with a challenge this popular anything could happen.

Biggest Losers in the Shocking “Year of the Choke”

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

2016 is officially the “Year of the Choke.” Never before have there been so many unbelievable “choke” moments in this small amount of a time. A “choke” moment is, for example, if someone did 99 successful bottle flips in a row, and then proceeded to miss the next one. Many of these chokes have occurred, mostly in the sports world, but even outside of it.
All the choking began in the NFL. Blair Walsh, in the conference semifinals, two games away from the Super Bowl, missed a 27-yard field goal to win the game with 25 seconds left. This ended up sending our Seattle Seahawks to the conference finals against the Carolina Panthers. Twenty-seven yards may seem like a long distance, but as a professional kicker that should be easy.
It didn’t stop there though, the Carolina Panthers who beat our Seahawks in that conference finals game were an undefeated team. Lead by Cam Newton, the team had not lost a game all year.
They went on to face the Denver Broncos, a team who most people thought would be eliminated by the New England Patriots weeks prior. The Panthers lost that game, despite being favored to win heavily. This “choke” was a huge upset of the NFL.
The “choking” continued even after the football season was over. In the NBA, the Golden State Warriors led by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson was in its prime coming off the NBA Championship against the Cavaliers in 2015.
The team was unstoppable in the 2016 regular season, winning 73 games— the most games ever won in history, topping Michael Jordan’s 72 wins. The Warriors probably felt on top of the world going into the 2016 playoffs.
They coasted through their first opponent, the Houston Rockets, and proceeded to easily beat the Portland Trailblazer. Then came the Oklahoma City Thunder, who had barely taken a win against the San Antonio Spurs, and now were faced with a game against the Warriors.
Lead by Kevin Durant and Russel Westbrook, the Thunder acquired a 3-1 lead. The Thunder proceeded to “choke”, losing their next three games and the conference finals. The Cavaliers, having a blatantly easier conference, blew all their opponents out of the water. They were the team matched up against the Warriors in the finals.
The Warriors thought they had the game in the bag, acquiring a 3-1 lead. In the history in of the NBA, no team had ever come back from a 3-1 lead in the NBA finals. LeBron James, leader of the Cavaliers, was determined to break this streak, and he did.
The Cavaliers won the next three games thanks to an outstanding performance by James and Irving as well. Just like that the Warriors had the biggest choke thus far.
And then it was baseball season, and the Cleveland Indians were destroying the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. Not only did the Indian’s have the tradition of “The Curses” on their side, the Cubs were down in the series 3-1. The odds of a team coming back from that far behind to win were slim. But the Cubs persevered in game 5, again in game 6 and brought themselves back to even.
The final game took 10 innings to complete, survived a rain delay and each team was ahead at some point. The Indians even came back in the eighth inning with a gigantic homerun, how could the lose? But they choked and lost by 1 in the 10th inning; the Cubs curses were broken.
The final “choke” is not sports related; it is political. The 2016 election was arguably the most heated one of all time, many liberals hated republican candidate Donald Trump, and many conservatives hated democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump was obviously behind, even with Clinton’s email scandal and many other things contributing negatively to her campaign. Despite this, Clinton seemed like the obvious winner for the election. Many still had hope though, that America could become great once again, under president Trump.
Come election day, many conservatives were hanging their heads, waiting for another democratic president. Then, Trump took the nation by storm. He won a ton of swing states and was very quickly in front of Clinton. He then proceeded to close out the election beating Clinton, and giving conservatives everywhere something to be happy about.
Sports, politics—there is no denying that this year is truly the “Year of the Choke.” What will 2017 have in store? Let’s hope more breathing.

X-country traditions prosper

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

Three point one miles. This is the distance a cross country has to trek, uphill and down running through rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Niklas Henning, a Varsity cross country runner speaks to the wear and tear a runner goes through both mentally dealing with motivation, and physically, “Being motivated to run and run faster is the hardest part. The last mile of the race when you have no energy left, or murder Monday.” Says Henning.
Murder Monday is the hardest workout of the week. This is because meets are usually on Wednesday, so the team wants to space out the harder workouts so they are not tired for the meet. Cross country this year is looking like it will go to districts, which is a great accomplishment.
These runners have worked hard all season in preparation for the league meet, and if they run fast enough they can make it passed the league meet and in to districts. This change is a better outcome for this year. Henning looks forward to next year’s success because of this years freshman and next year’s seniors, “There are a lot of new freshman runners and upcoming seniors who will do great for our varsity next year, the most talent that I have ever seen, look forward to seeing how everyone does next year.” says Henning.
A tradition of the team is called spaghetti dinners; these dinners are a time for the team to eats tons of carbs (to give them more energy in the upcoming races) while having fun. At these dinners they all go to someone’s house and hang out. When I talked to Henning, he told me this was his favorite part of being on the team.
This tradition unifies the team, when the team becomes more unified, it makes all the members more comfortable with each other. When they are more comfortable they encourage each other, and produce better results. It’s a common misconception that cross country isn’t a team sport, but Henning on team unity says, “The team unity is there; we encourage each other to go the extra mile.

NBA projections: ’16 – ’17

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

As the seasons of the NBA have progressed “Super Teams” have formed. Super Teams consist of a “Big Three,” this term describes a team with three all-star level players. These more often than not dominate the NBA.
These “Big Threes” are making the NBA unrecognizable. No longer can the game of basketball be dominated by just one player like Michael Jordan, or George Mikan it takes an elite squad containing three all-star players to compete.
The NBA is doing the opposite of that the United States is doing economically; the NBA is eliminating the middle class, no longer are there mediocre teams. In the modern rat race that they call the NBA being mediocre isn’t possible anymore.
The first modern big three was the San Antonio Spurs in 2004. It consisted of Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli and Tim Duncan. They were a dynasty that lived until about 2014 winning three championships until they all got old, and couldn’t keep up with the newer faster players.
The next, and probably one of the most controversial big threes of all time was the 2011 Miami Heat. They put together a team consisting of LeBron James, (arguably the best small forward in the league at the time,) Dwayne Wade (arguably the best shooting guard at the time,) and Chris Bosh, an excellent power forward. This team won two championships together, and probably would have won another then LeBron James left.
This year there are more big threes than ever before. The Golden State Warriors even have a big four this year, including Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green this team is heavily favored to win the NBA championship.
Other teams with a “big three” include, the New York Knicks: with Derrick Rose, Carmelo Anthony, and Joakim Noah, and the Chicago Bulls: with Rajon Rondo, Jimmy Butler, and Dwayne Wade.
Other teams have made huge improvements this year such as, The Utah Jazz, who have Gordon Hayward in his prime, Derrick Favors, Joe Johnson and Dante Exum, and the Indiana Pacers who have Jeff Teague, Monta Ellis, and Paul George.
Teams that are looking like conference finals contenders this year are the Cavaliers, and Clippers (playoff sureties and possible contenders for the championship.) Also the Spurs with Kawhi Leonard (defensive player of the year 2016), and Lamarcus Aldridge, and even the Memphis Grizzlies who have Mike Conley a deeply underrated point guard, and also Marc Gasol one of the best centers in the league. The Grizzlies are good enough to make the playoffs, they are in an easy division and have enough skill to make it.
Finally, two teams that will be good for years to come are the Phoenix Suns, who have young talent in Eric Bledsoe, Brandon Knight, and Devin Booker who I see maybe making it to the playoffs this year and definitely next year.
The other team is the Boston Celtics, they have acquired an excellent team with the likes of Paul Millsap, and Isaiah Thomas, but that’s not all. The Celtics have traded for a ton of first round and second round picks in the upcoming drafts, they will get so many good young players that in five years I predict they will go all the way and take an NBA championship.
Frankly, this next NBA season is going to be a doozy, there are more changes this season than any before and, predictions can be made, but the only real way to find out what happens this season is to sit back and watch.

Pokęmon go or no – SUCCESS

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

Pokémon GO is a game that has been revolutionizing the Pokémon franchise. This app is a GPS location based game that as you find Pokémon, you then catch them, and make them stronger. Pokémon go is an excellent advocate for making us healthier and happier.
Pokémon Go is making people exercise. It’s hard to stay active, whether it’s going to a gym or on a run there always seems to be an excuse to get out of it. Pokémon Go is helping people exercise more.
They have fun searching for Pokémon, and exercising without the grueling exertion of physical fitness. You can burn 138 calories an hour playing Pokémon go. Playing for 43 minutes a day, 7 days a week burns 1795 calories for males (equal to 7 small chocolate doughnuts), or Playing 43 minutes a day and catching around 22 Pokémon a day translates to 1 pound lost for males every 13.75 days, 1 pound lost for females every 16.27 days
Pokémon go is helping people’s mental health, people are benefitting from endorphins released from walking. These endorphins improve mental health. Roughly 43.8 million adults in the United States experience mental illness every year: equal to 1 in 5 adults. Mental illness is especially prominent in the video game world. But Pokémon Go players are finding the game helps them cope with General Anxiety, Social Anxiety, and Depression.
The app is also bringing people to places they’ve never been before. Pokémon in the game typically gather around Pokéstops which are usually important places in your community. Kevin Durant signs with Golden State Warriors

by Gunner Ellsworth – Staff Reporter

This summer, one of the most historic moments of all time in the NBA occurred; Kevin Durant was signed to the Golden State Warriors. He will now be teaming up with the likes of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green to compete for the NBA title.
First, about Kevin Durant as a player. Senior Tyson Wenger said that “He is soft”, but let’s look at what Durant has done. He was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2014, four-time NBA scoring champion, NBA Rookie of the Year: 2008, six-time All-NBA selection, and seven-time NBA All-Star.
For this reason, many teams wanted Durant to be released from his free agency, including the Celtics, Clippers, and Spurs. When asked, if Durant should have picked a different team, Junior Zach Archibald said, “No!! there is no better team than Golden State.”
The main concern that has risen by Kevin Durant joining the warriors is him having to share the spotlight with Stephen Curry, last year’s MVP.
Senior Julien Potts’ thoughts on this were, “With Durant joining the Warriors it could create a chemistry shift on the team, seeing as Curry took the majority of the shots last year, and with the addition of KD there are less shots for the best backcourt in the league.” This is true, however, Curry was one of the main advocates for the signing of Durant.
Another question is if Kevin Durant will improve the Warriors enough give them a ring in this upcoming NBA championship.
If there is another matchup for the Cavaliers, and the Warriors in the finals then Potts predicts, “The warriors had a solid starting five and traded away their bench for KD (Kevin Durant), the Cavs will still have a great bench and LeBron James beats out Durant in his position so the Cavs still have the upper hand.”
It currently appears that the Warriors and Cavs will be the finals contenders for the third year in a row, people believe that Durant will be good enough to beat the championship Cavs, while others believe the Cavs are still better.
In regards to the Kevin Durant signing, is the nobility of his choice? Is he a traitor for leaving OKC, or was it a smart career decision?
Wenger argues that it was not a noble thing to do, and that he abandoned OKC even though they were a championship caliber team.
Wenger said, “John Stockton didn’t leave Utah in the nineties for the bulls.” He was in a very similar situation. Stockton got beat in the finals by the bulls back to back times, but still stayed loyal to the Jazz through and this was the noble thing to do. If Stockton had joined the bulls he would have gotten a ring, Kevin Durant has made his decision, and what the team becomes is up in the air.
